Any way you look at it, mosquitoes cause problems but the most serious problem isn’t that they are annoying; their bites are dangerous and can affect your family’s (and pet’s) health, causing severe illness. The Zika virus is the latest reason to be concerned; but West Nile virus, Dengue Fever, Eastern equine encephalitis, canine and feline heartworm as well as other diseases are reasons you should seek protection from mosquitoes.
Male mosquitoes die after mating and the females begin their search for nourish-ment. The female mosquito feeds on blood of her victim in order to produce her eggs. Humans and other species are the source for that blood.
EcoSMART® was the first company to apply modern science to essential plant oils – creating the first 100% safe pesticides. Their organic products are based on the nat-ural defenses that plants and trees have used for self protection against insects and pathogens for millennia – essential oils. The blends of natural plant oils are every bit as effective as synthetic chemicals, killing bugs fast without any toxins or harmful residues.
EcoSMART® offers a repellent that can be safely sprayed on skin, mosquito fogger, hose-end mosquito and tick control and insect killer granules for lawns and landscapes.
Since EcoSMART®’s proprietary botanical oil blends attack attributes that are spe-cific only to pests, they have no effect on people, pets or the environment. The pri-mary active ingredients in EcoSMART® products are approved as Direct Food Addi-tives or classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
These oils are commonly used to add flavor and aroma to many cosmetic, beverage and food products, includ-ing cake, candy, sweetener, gum, soft drinks, and lip-stick. Children and pets are safe. No need to clear them out after application or be concerned if they are near our products. Our products have no adverse effect on mammals, birds, and fish and also will not contaminate water sources.
Certain essential oils are natural mosquito deterrents and Patio Egg™ makes use of
a deet-free “Scents of Nature” formula derived from natural essential oils. It is an
easy, save and effective way to keep mosquitos and other biting insects clear of
your deck, patio and outdoor living areas. It protects up to 200 square feet and will
provide up to four months of continuous diffusion. While you notice the pleasant
floral scent, mosquitoes will be sent packing out of your area.
EverSafe™ is an all-natural mosquito control which, once activated, can be detected by
mosquitoes from up to 75 feet away. The effective radius of one EverSafe™ packet covers
more than 15,000 square feet, or the size of the average back yard. Trials have shown
EverSafe™ to be effective for up to one week.
GoClip™ is infused with all-natural essential oils that protect your personal
space from mosquitoes, biting flies and ticks. It isn’t confined to a single area because it goes
where you go. Simply clip it to a shirt pocket, collar, waistband and you’re on your way! The
all-natural active ingredients are: clove oil, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil and cinnamon oil.
It is deet-free and kid-safe!
As you know, female mosquitoes need still water to lay their eggs. Minimizing
standing water is essential to controlling mosquitoes and that can be
done by improving natural drainage in areas where water tends to collect. Adding solar
pumps and water features causes the water to ripple and that motion drowns the mosquito
pupae. The #1 recommendation is the placement of a Water Wiggler. Water Wigglers employ
a small propeller which adds motion to standing water.
Permanent sources of water that contain fish such as ponds, water gardens, and canals usually develop ecosystems
that can support a larger, more diverse concentration of natural predators. The Journal of the American
Mosquito Control Association states that, under normal circumstances, natural predators eat 95% of an adult
mosquito’s offspring.
There is a natural larvacide containing the organic larvacide BTI (Bacillus Thuringensis var.
isralensis) that is available in floating MosquitoDunks® and MosquitoBits®. Use the dunks in
birdbaths, water barrels etc. and spread the bits every 30 days in areas of very slow moving
water (ditches, areas that gutters empty into etc.) It is important to monitor and drain or
unclog gutters or birdbaths.
Another recommendation is that you consider hanging a bat house.
Each adult can eat several hundred mosquitoes per night! You can also put up birdhouses
for chickadees, wrens, purple martins and other insectivorous species; and encourage
frogs, toads and dragonflies to take up residence by installing a buffer of tall grasses and
native plants around ponds and streams.
